Continuing to Build for Our Residents’ Future

In February 2023, Kevin Weil, Facilities Supervisor, and his amazing team completed the impressive construction of our new facilities building. Some of the needed materials were delayed due to supply issues so we waited in anticipation. Eventually, each item that arrived represented a celebratory step forward in continuing to build for our residents’ future.

Welcome!

Welcome to HEEFS’s facilities building! It is located just off the main road, beside Forest Two and our compost pile for the pastures and gardens.

The red shipping container will become our new feed storage unit. Storing our bags of kibble and grains for all the residents in there will mean that the delivery trucks won’t have to drive near the barns or coops anymore, which helps to protect our biosecurity on the property. In addition, Andrea is working closely with our veterinarian to ensure that we don’t store anything past a certain length of time because we don’t want the residents’ food to lose its nutritional value.

Next, the blue shipping container in the center will soon have windows and a door, and will become our workshop. This is where Kevin and his team can work safely in a more open space to build and repair shelters, fencing, enrichment opportunities for the residents, and so much more!

For efficiency, the blue unit will eventually be cut open so it can connect to the orange unit, which will house all the tools and other building supplies.

Under the white canopy is where we now can park the quad, transport trailer, lawn equipment, bags of pellet bedding, wood shavings, road salt, and sand. We are thrilled that this new roof will now be able to protect our equipment from the often harsh Ontario weather up on the Niagara Escarpment.

Garage Space

Now that our 3-bay garage is almost empty, we will be able to slowly build our Quarantine and Recovery Suite! When we welcome home newly rescued farmed animals, everyone must live in quarantine until they are tested and treated for any health issues before joining their herd or flock. And our recovery area will be a peaceful place available for anyone who is recovering from an illness or medical procedure.

It’s Because of Your Support

We began to notice more and more, that having a separate space for quarantine and a quiet space for recovering are invaluable areas for providing what individual residents require based on their current needs. In addition, having the many benefits of the new feed storage unit and facilities building are what was needed to help our sanctuary run safely and smoothly for our residents, for years to come.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to you! We are so grateful that you believe in our mission, values, and exciting plans for the future. We couldn’t have provided this for our beloved residents without you!
