How It Works!

About The Esther Shares Medical Fund

The Esther Shares Medical Fund has been set up to provide financial assistance to farmed animal sanctuaries in Canada and the United States that find themselves in need due to sudden or unforeseen medical expenses. The Fund does not provide assistance for routine or preventative care, or for spays and neuters.

Register Your Sanctuary

Farmed animal sanctuaries are asked to register with the Esther Shared Medical Fund well before they find themselves in need. This is done through our online registration form found here.

Once your registration information is received, it will be processed and you will be sent an email either indicating your acceptance or explaining why your sanctuary does not qualify for the Fund.

Once You are Approved

Now that you are registered, you can apply for funds when needed. Please note that funds will be considered for the medical bill for one farmed animal resident. The definition of a farmed animal for this program includes any pig (not including pot-belled pigs), sheep, goat, turkey, rabbit, cows, chicken, or duck that was bred for the purpose of human consumption.

While we prefer that funding requests be made and approved in advance of the medical procedure, exceptions for medical emergencies may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Applying for Funds

If your sanctuary is faced with an unexpected medical emergency, and needs to apply to the Fund, please follow these steps.

Step 1.png

1.   Sending in Your Funding Request

Funding requests should be sent to esthershares@happilyeveresther.ca and should include the following information:

  • The name of the animal

  • A description of their medical condition and what procedure is necessary

  • A quote for the procedure from a veterinarian

2.   Processing your Request

Once you have made a request, please allow up to two days for a response.
You may hear from one of our team members requesting additional information during this time.

3.   Receiving your Payment

Any payment will be made directly to the sanctuary after receipt of a paid invoice from an accredited veterinary hospital. The payment amount will be up to 50% of the total bill, up to a maximum of $3,000.00, based on the currency of the country of origin (including medications and medical procedures).

Reimbursement to a sanctuary can only occur once per calendar year, but we encourage sanctuaries that have received funding in the past to apply again!
