THE IMPORTANCE OF DAILY OBSERVATIONS AND REGULAR HEALTH CHECKS
/by Andrea White, Animal Care Manager
At Happily Ever Esther Farm sanctuary, the health and well-being of our residents is always top of mind. Every day, our team keeps a close eye on everyone—from morning barn openings to evening tuck-ins. We’re constantly observing for any signs of illness or distress, including changes in behaviour, appetite, gait, social interactions, and of course, visible signs like limping or wounds.
Morning check-ins are especially important. It's our first opportunity each day to see how everyone is doing and whether they’re acting like their “usual selves.” While we follow general care guidelines for each species, we also know that every resident is unique. That’s why it's vital to understand what “normal” looks like for each individual.
In addition to daily observations, we conduct thorough health checks for every resident every six weeks. These are scheduled through our resident database, and each exam is fully documented. Our health checks include a nose (or beak!) to tail exam: we assess eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, feet, legs, hooves or nails, and overall body condition. We feel for any lumps, bumps, or sensitivities that could indicate a developing issue.
We’re always looking for changes—big or small—because early detection is everything. Preventative care not only reduces stress and potential suffering; it also helps us avoid larger medical issues (and vet bills!) down the road.
Because when it comes to their health, sooner is always better.
