This year has been challenging for everyone and HEEFS was no exception, but with your continued love and support we not only got through 2020 but we accomplished many of our goals and took on some new and unexpected challenges along the way.

Back in our June newsletter we gave you the inside scoop on how Nancy, James, Walter, Summer, Jolene and all of Fiona’s piglets got their names. In this issue, we’ll let you know how we came up with the names for Bobbie, Lenny, Captain Dan, Gladys and Luanne!

Following in the footsteps of her brother, longtime HEEFS volunteer, Dan Green, Sharron began volunteering with us on July 2, 2018. “It was Dan’s enthusiasm about the Sanctuary that rubbed off on me, and now I am a regular volunteer,” says Sharron.

It is hardwired into most animals to hide pain. Pain, or any sign of weakness or reduced capacity, can attract predators or affect an animal’s rank in their herd.

“He’s not bad”, says Andrea, HEEFS Supervisor, Animal Care. “Diablo is truly misunderstood.” In this article we’ll take a closer look at Diablo, who he is, and why he does the things he does.

Dolly, a very sweet and sociable turkey, came to HEEFS after being found on the side of the highway by Sergeant Scott Richardson of the Waterloo Regional Police Service.
